Stitched Cloth Fragments onto Hemp

The Remains Series began in late 2009 when I was asked to install a one person show with little time to create new work. I looked about the studio for material inspiration and began cutting into wax paper. The remaining pieces from the panels I was making became the inspiration for this new series. The most recent work has come from the remains created while I'm sewing my clothing collections. The scraps that land in the basket below my sewing machine have become useful for hand stitch applique onto hemp. The tone on tone color allows the texture to be the focus.

Stitched and Pierced Silk and Gut

Intuit is my latest Shibori exploration created for the 2011 Internationl Shibori Symposium this December in Hong Kong. The theme presented to me was "Animal Fiber: Shibori Informs Art. After having worked with silk from the Gunma Prefecture in Japan for many years I was encouraged to add yet another "animal" protein to the mix. I chose hog intestine because it has many of the properties that I have come to admire in the silk. They share the quailities of translucency, resillience and can hold a surface texture. The outcome of this experiment was a success in that both materials affected one another equally.
